As part of the Cover Our Kids campaign with the aim of providing non-surgical masks to students in households who otherwise may have difficulty obtaining them during the COVID-19 health pandemic, Bay Shore Schools landed a mass donation of these masks to distribute to students and parents making use of its grab-and-go breakfast/lunch program. When acquiring lunch for that day and breakfast for the following morning, students utilizing the grab-and-go program received these masks in packages of five.
Bay Shore Schools superintendent Joseph Bond accepted the donation from the Promise of Hope Foundation, RENU Contracting Restoration and Mil- burn Flooring. After being contacted by Michael VanDenburg, principal of RENU Contracting Restoration and Milburn Flooring, Bond helped to facilitate the donation of masks to additional school districts. VanDenburg and his team dropped the masks off to Bay Shore High School, where he and Bond were joined by Brentwood superintendent Richard Loeschner, Islip superintendent Ellen Semel and Central Islip assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction Sharon Dungee.
“The new requirement that everyone must wear a mask when in a public setting provides a challenge for families who may be facing difficulty accessing food, let alone accessing masks,” Bond said. “We have been working hard since schools first closed to help provide our students with meals by operating a grab-and-go program, which distributes over 4,000 meals per week in three locations. This donation from RENU Contracting,
Milburn Flooring, and The Promise of Hope Foundation will allow us to provide our most vulnerable population with masks that will help keep our children and their families safe.”
Bond thanked VanDenburg and his team for making the donation possible.
In the Bay Shore School District, meals are available to students at Bay Shore High School, Bay Shore Middle School and Gardiner Manor School between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on weekdays. As per the mass donation of non-surgical masks, students will receive five when utilizing the grab-and-go.
