Islip woman celebrates 50 years with Babylon Chorale

As the Babylon Chorale celebrates 70 years as a group, only Mabelle Baepler can say she has been a member for the last 50.

An Islip resident, Baepler said she has always loved music, and being part of the chorale has enforced that.

“Being part of the chorale has enriched my joy of music,” Baepler said. “I have developed an appreciation for a variety of types of music and made many good friends.”

For more than 20 years, Baepler participated in the chorale’s ensemble, a smaller group whose repertoire includes Broadway and popular tunes, jazz, sacred, and seasonal music. The group performs for weddings and other social gatherings, civic and business functions, adult homes and libraries.

Baepler remembered the various faces that have come and gone through the chorale over her 50 years with the group.

“I have formed many good friendships and seen a few conductors come and go,” she said.

Baepler said classical is her favorite genre to sing and to listen to. Through her time with the chorale, the work of Austrian composer Franz Schubert grew on her. Baepler said she practiced his works often when taking singing lessons during the 1990s, too.

Baepler said she moved to Islip in 1966, and has been an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Islip the entire time. Regarding her career, she was a nurse and X-ray technician working out of a doctor’s office in Bay Shore for a long time. In her free time, she said she likes sewing and has always enjoyed it. n
