Young students: What does Memorial Day mean to you?

Posted

Memorial Day parades and public cel- ebrations have been canceled for this year, as per social-distancing requirements considering the health pandemic. But Monday, May 25, 2020, will still be celebrated. The Town of Islip is asking elementary school students to tell them what Memorial Day means to them.

“On Memorial Day, we pay tribute to those who served our country with parades, festivities, barbecues and cele- brations that traditionally would bring people together in remembrance,” said Islip Town supervisor Angie Carpenter. “Although this year will be different, let’s honor our veterans in a new way.”

The submissions will be posted on the Town of Islip’s social media channels to help spread support and admiration for United States heroes.

All interested students are encouraged to submit their name, age, school and picture (optional), along with a paragraph explaining what Memorial Day means to them. Students are asked to send paragraphs and photos via email to Submissions@islipny.gov. It is requested to include “Memorial Day 2020” in the subject line of the email.

Additionally, the Town of Islip has posted a printable American Flag on their social media pages for children to color and hang on their door or window. A spokesperson said a town photographer will be keeping an eye out for them and will take a photo, which may be posted on the town’s website.

The town urges residents to remember to practice social distancing, wear a mask and maintain good hand hygiene.

“We’re in this together... just six feet apart,” Carpenter said.
