Don’t miss this summer sailing program

Bellport Bay Sailing Foundation offers seasonal program

Posted

One of the beautiful things about life on the South Shore is the proximity to the water. What better way to explore it than from a sailboat slicing through the wind on a crystal-clear day?

If that sounds appealing, Bellport Bay Sailing Foundation is offering group sailing lessons this summer for children ages 6 to 17 and adults.

Group sessions start June 26 and, depending on the type of sailboat, range from $675 for a three-and-a-half-week program to $1,500 for a seven-week program.

Bellport Bay Sailing Foundation has been offering a summer sailing program since about 1999.

Over the years, about 50 students have gone on to sail for their college teams, said Zach Runci, who coaches the racing team and is sailing coach at SUNY Maritime College.

The program has become so popular that this year’s group sessions are sold out. However, people can sign up for a waiting list and private lessons are also available, said Megan Reitzel, the program’s registrar.

Private lessons are on a per-session basis and range from $65 to $100 for each one-hour session, depending on the instructor, according to the sailing foundation website.

The sailing program is based at the Bellport Bay Yacht Club, but you don’t need to be a yacht club member or Bellport resident to sign up.
