In 1930, the year the Hagerman Fire Department was founded, the Major League Baseball schedule included the Boston Braves, St. Louis Browns and Washington Senators.
In the years since, those teams have each relocated multiple times, but the Hagerman Fire Department remains a constant.
The department celebrated its 95th anniversary on Saturday, with a huge parade that stepped off at South Country Road and Dunton Avenue and proceeded up Dunton Avenue to the firehouse on Ralph T. Perry Drive, where family, friends, and supporters gathered for food and a musical performance by That ‘70s Band.
“We’ve come a long way,” ex-chief Kenny Dean said of the volunteer department, which has about 110 members. “From fighting without turnout gear to long boots and long coats, to now we’re up to the year 2025 and technology has helped us. The community is willing to step up to help us do the right thing. In another five years, I hope everyone is around to celebrate our 100th anniversary.”
The occasion also was noted by local lawmakers who attended Saturday’s parade.
Suffolk County Legis. Dominick Thorne called it “a great day for Suffolk County.”
“Happy 95th birthday,” State Sen. Dean Murray said. “Here’s to 95 more.”
The parade featured a long line of fire equipment, with their lights flashing, and marchers from several area fire departments, including Bay Shore, Holbrook, Lindenhurst and Patchogue.
There was plenty of music, too, from bands in the parade, including spirited renditions of “When the Saints Go Marching In,” by the Durning String Band of Gloucester, N.J., and of Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline,” by the New Wave Drum & Bugle Corps.
The Hagerman Fire Department was formed in 1930 by Philip Di Paola, William Gazzola, Ralph Perry Sr., George Stephani and Walter Stephani, according to the department’s website.
At 95, Hagerman is about the same age as several other local fire departments, including the Medford Fire Department, which was founded in 1922, and the Yaphank Fire Department, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026.
Dean said the department is always looking for people to fill a variety of roles.
“It’s a passion and it’s a calling, and every firefighter will tell you that,” he said. “Do you want to do something good for the community? Come be a fireman.”
