Westhampton trekked to Bayport on Monday for a Division II varsity lacrosse matchup at Bob Sullivan Field. The Phantoms hosted the Hurricanes for a 4:30 p.m. matinee on a sunny but breezy divisional strife on 200 Snedecor Avenue.

Both teams headed into the bout undefeated: Bayport-Blue Point at 2-0 and Westhampton Beach at 1-0. BBP beat Massapequa 7-5 last Wednesday and won by a sliver 8-7 vs. Wantagh on Friday.

BBP Senior Brady Smith tended to the netminding duties while Junior Charlie Beasley was between the pipes for Westhampton Beach. Traigh Tomassone was the outset of the scoring on the day when he flung a rocket into the mesh just 55 seconds into the game, giving the Phantoms a 1-0 lead. Ben Morris gave his team a 2-0 lead scoring 3 minutes and 5 seconds into the game. Westhampton’s Drew Calloway cut BBP’s lead in half exactly 59 seconds later and it was 2-1. The Phantoms’ Connor Curran tacked on a goal just prior to the first horn sounding with 26 seconds to go in the opening quarter.

The scoreboard read 3-1 Bayport-Blue Point at the end of the first. There was no scoring for over 6 minutes in the second period, then Traigh Tomassone notched his second goal of the afternoon with 5:32 to go in the second then Maclin Keyser slammed one between the pipes for the fifth Bayport-Blue Point goal with the second horn imminently approaching as there was just 7 seconds left in the second.

At the conclusion of 21 minutes, it was 5-1 Phantoms. Keyser picked up where he left off with another goal, this time shortly into the third period. Shortly afterwards, the Hurricanes swarmed back into the game with goals by Heath Sumwalt, Nolan Michalowski, and Finn Drake. It was 6-4 Phantoms at the end of three periods of play.

The lead became very scant after Dante Mansfield added another Westhampton goal and it was 6-5. Ben Morris swooped in for some fourth quarter heroics, ringing up his third and fourth goals of the afternoon. Morris chalked up BBP’s seventh goal with just under 5 minutes left in the game and attained his team’s eighth after he was slashed and was falling to the grass, but he flung a missile to the net looking like a point guard making a fadeaway shot with just over 2 minutes left and Phantoms had a three-goal cushion.

Morris finished the day with four goals and two assists. With inside 2 minutes to play, two more goals were scored, one by Maclin Keyser and one by Heath Sumwalt.

The final score was Bayport-Blue Point 9, Westhampton Beach, 5. Charlie Beasley had nine saves and Brady Smith had six.
