Lax girls take championship title

Bayport-Blue Point varsity girls lacrosse season

It has been nothing but success for Bayport-Blue Point girls varsity lacrosse for nearly a decade. Last year, Bayport-Blue Point beat Shoreham-Wading River to win the Suffolk County Championship and had previously won the Suffolk title in 2021, the Long Island Championship in 2019, and nine years prior started their dynasty capturing the county title in 2014. On Sunday, at Adelphi University, Bayport-Blue Point beat Manhasset, 9-6, to win the 2023 Long Island Class C Championship.

Last year, Manhasset beat BBP 8-6 in the LIC, and a year later the Phantoms exacted their ghastly revenge. Also last Tuesday at Stony Brook University, with a trip to the Long Island Championship on the line, the defending Suffolk County champs solidified a four-peat after beating Mount Sinai, 11-4, and extended their reign to four consecutive years.

And in a season in which defeat has eluded them, the Phantoms have excelled in perfection with a 19-0 record. The season began in late March with a 9-3 home win against Sayville, followed by an 11-7 win at Mount Sinai. After a 2-0 start that induced their momentum, the Phantoms won six straight games, all by six goals or more, including three wins outscoring their opponent by double digits: 15-3 against West Babylon, 14-4 at Comsewogue, and 12-2 against Islip. In their lowest goal total of the season, Bayport-Blue Point lax beat Eastport-South Manor 6-4 on the road, then beat Westhampton and shut out East Islip at East Islip, 12-0. Following the onslaught, they defeated Shoreham-Wading River by 6 points, then Harborfields by 10, dominated West Islip by 11 goals, then finished the regular season out in style with a road win, annihilating Smithtown West, 14-2.

Because they were the No. 1 seed in Suffolk Division II, Bayport-Blue Point was awarded a first-round bye. They hosted and defeated the Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats by a score of 8-6 on Saturday, May 20, in the Suffolk County semifinals, then beat the Mount Sinai Mustangs 11-4 on Tuesday, May 30, at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook to win the Suffolk title, then won the LIC after a 9-6 win over Manhasset and will play for the New York State semifinals this weekend.

In the victorious 2023 campaign from Bayport-Blue Point, some of the top performers were seniors Mikaela Mooney, who is committed to Albany; Haydin Eisfeld, committed to Stony Brook; Keira Rooney (University of Florida); Maggie Kennedy (Quinnipiac); juniors Shannon Kroog, Julia Fusco, Kate Lemery, and Kayla Vazquez; and sophomores Erika Kreuscher and Emma Shanahan.
