Strong swimming skills mandated by program

On Saturday, Aug. 24, the BSA Troop 130 held a car wash at Geoghan’s Insurance building on Montauk Highway in Bayport and raised $940 towards an adventure camp outing in Key West during spring break of 2025.

Twelve boys from the troop are planning to attend the camp known as “Sea Base Florida,” where they will be sailing, snorkeling, and kayaking for the week.

Camping out on an uninhabited island for a night or two, the scouts will also be sleeping on the sailboat.

In order to qualify for the trip, the scouts had to earn their swimming merit badge, which included demonstrating proficiency in assessing health concerns like hypothermia, dehydration, sunburn, heat exhaustion, muscle cramps, spinal injury, hyperventilation, stings/bites, and cuts/scrapes.

For the physical portion of the merit badge, scouts had to jump feet first into water and swim 75 yards using any combination of or all: sidestroke, breaststroke, trudgen, or crawl.

Afterwards, scouts had to swim 25 yards in a resting backstroke. The 100 yards were to be swum continuously with at least one sharp turn.

Another car wash will be held on Sunday, Sept. 22, at Geoghan Insurance building.
