It is not often that you look through a varsity sports roster and see a middle schooler as one of the featured athletes. That is the case for Luke Vlahakis, an eighth grader at Reed Middle School who finished second at the Suffolk County Singles/Doubles Tournament.
“To accomplish this as an eighth grader is an amazing achievement,” head coach Frank DeModna said. “It’s unprecedented.”
Luke is no stranger to success. Last year, his average was 164.72 with 14 wins for the season. This year, his average has improved to 185.72 with 23 wins, and he still has four matches remaining. He has earned points this year against some of the top bowlers in the league, including competitors from East Islip, Islip, and Commack.
During his run at the tournament, he defeated the #1 bowler from the match play portion in the semi-finals. Additionally, his performance at the tournament marked the first time he bowled five consecutive games over 200.
“Luke helps all of the new bowlers with style and technique pointers,” DeModna said. “He truly is a leader, even at such a young age. He is definitely the leader for the future of this team and gives us promise of a successful bowling program moving forward.”
