Suffolk County Police Acting Commissioner Robert Waring held a press conference to share details of an ongoing investigation involving an officer-involved shooting and police chase that occurred last night, April 4.
Last night, detectives were conducting a confidential investigation in Bohemia. While detectives were attempting to place a suspect — 33 year old Brandon Scanlon of Middle Island — under arrest, he fled in a minivan. As Scanlon fled the scene, the vehicle struck an officer, knocking him to the ground, and officers pursued as Scanlon continued to flee.
The pursuit traveled from Bohemia to Brentwood and ended in Bay Shore. Throughout the pursuit, there were multiple exchanges of gunfire. Brandon Scanlon sustained a gunshot wound that occurred while exchanging gunfire with officers.
The pursuit lasted roughly 25 minutes before the suspect’s vehicle crashed into trees on the north service road of Sunrise Highway, just east of Robert Moses, at approximately 7:20 p.m. Scanlon was placed under arrest, and is facing drug and weapon charges. A ghost gun was also recovered from his vehicle at the scene.
Scanlon has prior arrests of pending felony narcotics related charges. As the investigation continues, he could face additional charges.
Scanlon was transported and admitted to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. Five Suffolk County Police Officers were also transported to the hospital for evaluation.
“This is another example of the dangers police face every day,” explained Suffolk County Police Acting Commissioner Robert Waring. “Scanlon posed a threat to every person on the roadway, and had a blatant disregard for the safety of the public, and our officers. This suspect struck an officer with his car and fired at police. It is imperative for our officers to stop this dangerous individual.”
Moving forward, the Suffolk County Police Department’s Homicide Squad is conducting the investigation. The SCPD is collaborating with the District Attorney’s Office, and Internal Affairs will review the incident, which is part of SCPD protocol.
“This is a complicated case that involves multiple precincts and multiple crime scenes. We are still reviewing evidence and conducting interviews,” shared Waring. “As information becomes available, we will provide it to you.”
