A winter storm warning is in effect for the South Shore from 4:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 13, as heavy snow is expected to accumulate. The Town of Islip is projected to receive 5 to 10 inches, and Brookhaven Town is expected to receive up to 5 inches of snow on the South Shore, and up to 7 inches along the North Shore of Brookhaven Town.
The winter storm warning indicates wind gusts as high as 40 mph, heavy snow and wet conditions that increase potential for downed tree branches and power lines, and possible scattered areas of flooding in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline.
In the event of 6+ inches of snow, you can expect severe traffic delays, many accidental spin-outs, plowing and road treatment, and airport delays.
The following precautions should be taken to ensure your safety during this and future snow events:
Call 911 for police, fire and ambulance emergencies only.
Do not approach downed power lines. To report a power outage or downed wires, call PSEG at 800-490-0075 or go to www.psegliny.com to file a report online.
Islip Town residents are advised to move cars into their driveway or onto their lawns if necessary, to allow plows clear access to plow roads safely and efficiently. Should this storm require Town officials to declare a state of emergency, residents are reminded that it is a violation of Town Code to leave a vehicle on the road while the state of emergency is in effect. Leaving a car on the road is dangerous to plow operators and can result in damage to vehicles.
Brookhaven Town residents should call 451-TOWN to report snow related issues. Please go to the Town’s website at www.brookhavenny.gov for up-to-date snow related news, information, weather updates and emergency contact numbers.
