Two more parcels saved for open space

Two more parcels located in Manorville were closed on by the Town of Brookhaven in May. Supervisor Dan Panico recently announced the parcels equal to over 9 acres of woodland will be designated as open space, never to be developed.

The parcels (outlined in red) are located in the Histand Trust on Halsey Manor Road and Nicholl on Putter Court, in Manorville. The total cost of the undeveloped land was $536,620.

Histand Trust – Halsey Manor Road, Manorville, 6.8 acres of woodlands

Located within the core of the Central Pine Barrens, this property will forever aid in protecting our drinking water supply, providing a visual buffer from travelers on the Long Island Expressway, and contribute to the extensive preserved forests which are home to numerous rare and endangered species.

Nicholl – Putter Ct., Manorville, 2.7 acres of woodlands

A nearly 3-acre acquisition in the CGA of the Central Pine Barrens, this acquisition abuts existing protected Town of Brookhaven lands and further expands the town’s open-space holdings in Manorville. This property provides forest habitat for myriad species, including migratory birds, and helps to protect our drinking-water supplies.

“I am extremely grateful that the TOB was able to recently purchase more properties in Manorville. Our entire town board appreciates the value of having open space preserved,” said councilwoman Karen Dunne Kesnig.

The Manorville properties, she explained, are in the Pine Barrens.

“By purchasing these properties, we can help manage invasive species (such as the southern pine beetle) and also work to protect our groundwater,” she added
